Your City

Burns

Day and night

Like a Roman fire

In a temple.

Virgin hands

Never could

Keep such flames ablaze

Even with a pyramid of wood.

Will that passionate warmth

Evaporate the oncoming waves

Into a plethora of moist hisses

Or will your city flood

Like Atlantis?

This traveler

Explores but

Is no navigator

If your walls drown

If your fire cools

I, too, will extinguish.

Beautiful “peplum” poem – with a very profound last line. I love it Benjamin!
