What I Want To Write

I want to write the kind of words
That will kick you
Not in the gut
But in the soul

Though I don’t want to mend your heart
I want to break it into
A thousand pieces of a thousand pieces

Maybe then I’ll reform it until it is
What it always was supposed to be
Or what it was before you knew
It was your heart

You make me wish
The world were flat
And you were sailing
In a boat toward its end

The Nod

You would think the shake
But no
The nod
Is the quickest way to make
Words go in one ear and out the other
Since mouths close quickest when
You agree

I have no words
For that word
Only broken images:
Burned bridges
Fallen trees
Slanted flowers
Clouded light
