Once I thought you were a zero
The queen of numbers
Able to morph all things within
Yet leave them changeless

But like the number zero
Unfortunately you have an ability
To make all things around you
Equal your value

And once I thought you were just a pest
But I’ve come to realize
You are much more like a

Only you
Can turn
Every thing
Into no thing

Your love was like a butterfly
Beautiful one day
Dead the next

These are not haikus
Taboo has leapt into them
They contain cutting words

Ms. Gravedigger

I thought “Gravedigger” was a nickname
Earned in High School
On the Volleyball Team
Because, in your own words, you were “Six feet dead on.”

Though why didn’t I rethink my thoughts
When you said: “Sleeping is my favorite pastime.”
Or: “I prefer sunset over sunrise.”
Or even: “Grim is the dictionary’s best word.”

Once, I asked you the name of your father
You joked, “Father Time.”
That was no joke.

Had I known your surname was Gravedigger
I wouldn’t have agreed to give you my hand
And I swear on my headstone—
I wouldn’t have followed you into the dark.

The moon
Closer than close

This soil
So soft

Shoeless feet
Far from cold

Sucking sin

From within
You disintegrate

Underneath your skin

Rising in dreams

Brunette clouds
Curtaining moonlight

You’re envious
Of those fixed stars

The soil
So soft

You may lay down
And never wake up

An eraser that erases mess
An eraser to protect
Erasing space
Erasing place
Erasing with erasing haste
Erase hate
Erase                  erase
Erase what we’ve erased

Erase so fast
Erase with pace
Erase so hard
Erase your face
Erase your mind
Erase Erases
Erasing time

Erase with every eraser you find
Erase the erase the eraser makes

Once the sky falls asleep

I have this constant fear of looking up

Afraid the stars may be released upon my head

Tears never fall in space

But it’s never been the tears that made us sad

Though words will never hurt me

My words will get me hurt

In order to love like nature intended do we need three hearts?

Five eyes to see the world we’ve all created?

Sometimes I have this nightmare that I’m dumber than a banana

Why are there more than a 1,000 ways to die but only half as many ways to love?

I’m always comforted by this dream where God says:

“You weren’t a mistake

The Dinosaurs were.”
